Confidence is often treated as something people either have or they don't. It is praised in leaders, encouraged in young people, and admired in successful entrepreneurs. Yet confidence is rarely the starting point. More often, it appears quietly, after someone has done something they weren't completely sure they could do. Maria Praljak has seen that pattern throughout her own life.

Buying her first investment property at eighteen while completing a double degree in law wasn't driven by certainty. It was driven by a willingness to make a decision, accept responsibility, and learn along the way. Many years later, she still sees confidence as something that grows through action rather than careful planning alone.

After working aboard luxury superyachts, Maria became Chalet Manager of an exclusive five-star chalet in Courchevel 1850 in the French Alps, managing an elite international clientele in one of Europe's best-known luxury destinations. Living beside the renowned Cheval Blanc chalet, she regularly attended Louis Vuitton hospitality events while continuing to build her experience in luxury service. During her six-month season in Courchevel, she also witnessed the aftermath of Formula One legend Michael Schumacher's skiing accident, a moment that reinforced how quickly circumstances can change and the importance of remaining calm under pressure.

Returning to Australia brought another opportunity to begin again. Instead of staying within luxury hospitality, Maria moved into business and property development, stepping into an industry with different expectations and challenges. Starting over meant asking questions, learning unfamiliar systems, and accepting that confidence would come with experience rather than immediately.

Today, the business creates destination photography experiences in Santorini, Bali, New York, Vietnam, the Maldives, Australia, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Seattle, and Alaska. The flowing gowns are what people see first, but Maria has always believed the photographs tell only part of the story.

Many of the women who book an experience arrive at an important point in their lives. Some are celebrating birthdays or anniversaries. Others have come through difficult personal chapters or simply want to do something for themselves after years of putting everyone else first. By the end of the day, the photographs often represent something much larger than the location or the dress. They become a reminder that taking time to recognise your own achievements isn't selfish. It's necessary.

One conversation has stayed with Maria over the years. A client told her the photoshoot was the first time in years she had stopped thinking about everyone else's needs and remembered who she was as an individual. It wasn't a dramatic moment. It was a quiet realisation, and Maria believes many women experience something similar when they finally give themselves permission to be seen.

Her work outside business follows the same philosophy. Through speaking engagements, the Global Women Peace Foundation, and Dress for Success Victoria, she encourages women to make decisions that strengthen both their confidence and their independence. The focus is rarely on motivation alone. Practical skills, financial awareness, and real-world experience all play an important part in helping confidence take root.

Maria doesn't believe confidence appears before people take on new challenges. She believes it grows because they do. Looking back, every unfamiliar role, every career change, and every business she has built asked the same thing of her: take the first step before you feel completely ready.

It is a lesson she continues to share with other women. Confidence isn't something we wait to find. More often, it is something we build, one decision at a time.
